On 19 April 1972, USS STERETT (DLG 31) and three other ships were attacked by North Vietnamese forces. The Chief of Naval Operations, then ADM Elmo R. Zumwalt, described the Dong Hoi battle as an “outstanding combat action.” He messaged the ship’s officer and crew, “Your ability to expeditiously engage and suppress the enemy demonstrates high individual professionalism and team coordination that will be difficult to surpass” (Surface Warfare Magazine, April 1978). The crew that day earned the coveted Combat Action Ribbon (CAR).
