Dear STERETT Family,

It is with deep regret that I inform you of the unexpected loss of Immediate Past President Steve Hayes (DLG 31, 68-70 and CG 31, 81-84) yesterday December 16, 2020.  Steve had just completed a medical procedure when he collapsed and unfortunately, the medical team was not able to revive him.  I am still in shock and a loss for words to express my sadness for Steve’s family and our Association.

As many of you know, Steve led the Association for over 8 years, and gave his heart and soul to make our Association what it is today.  The name “Steve Hayes” will be synonymous with the “USS STERETT Association” for many, many years to come as he called the Association “his hobby,” expressing often how challenging it was for him to pass it on.  Job well done brother, rest in peace Steve, we have the watch…

At the moment there are no plans for a memorial service due to COVID-19 and the Holidays.  The only thing that his youngest daughter Lydia mentioned was that Steve’s wishes were to be cremated.  As soon as we have additional information, we will surely pass it on.  Please keep the Hayes family in your thoughts and prayers for strength as they walk through this very difficult time.

Godspeed, chuck

Charles A. Bond
President, USS STERETT Association
