Dear USS STERETT Shipmates, family and friends,
With the rise of COVID-19 infections in San Antonio, the current trend is alarming. This has caused Vice President Burton Dietz and me to field numerous questions about the reunion, with many stating they were very concerned and considering cancelling their registration. It is no secret that the numbers are spiking around the country, especially in Texas and in particular San Antonio. The population that is taking the brunt is those of us in our later years in life, which is the bulk of those currently registered.
Since day one I have stated that everyone’s safety is at the forefront. Without a crystal ball and honestly fearing getting someone infected, or worse, dying from COVID-19 exposure, has had me very concerned; therefore, I brought these concerns to the Association Board of Directors and decide if we should remain on course or postpone to a future time. Both sides are problematic and we had to come up with a decision that is in the best interest of everyone involved.
It is with disappointment that I announce the decision to postpone the 2021 reunion. The new dates will be 11-14 May 2022 and the location site will remain the same – the Holiday Inn Riverwalk. All current room reservations will be cancelled and you will have to call in once again to make the new reservation. I know this will cause a lot of heartbreak, but I am optimistic that it is the right decision.
Carpe diem, Charles “Chuck” Bond, President
